Engine hour question

Default Engine hour question

I just purchased a 2011 f250 6.2 for 17k, it has a lot of engine hours but I was wondering what is average and what is too much? It has 99000 miles on it, It has 5939 engine hours of which 3631 are idle hours, and according to carfax has only traveled 3000 miles over the past 5 years, maybe a fleet truck? It is very clean and all gearboxes, tranny fluid and oil are very clean, it appears to have been well taken care of, don't know much about engine hours though, was this an ok deal?

I'm assuming the last owner must have added about 2k idle hours

Interesting post. Is there an engine hour meter on the vehicle? This is the first post I have read that mentioned hours.

While a vehicle may have low mileage and considerable hours run, it might be a good idea to keep this thought in mind.

A vehicle was being taken out of service because it was on the list to be replaced.
It had only 32,000 miles and of course no hours run available. What the mechanics knew was the vehicle only ran a few miles a day, idled a lot and the trips were short ones. When the bidding opened up to purchase the vehicle , no mechanic would touch the vehicle because nobody could answer how many short trips the vehicle made totally. Persons not knowing this thought is was a bargin because of the low mileage, so they bid for it and won it. Not one month later the differential let go, the engine went to pot and the trans was competing for first place. The vehicle never saw the open road and when it did , it suffered a rapid death. There is that old story of the school teacher who only drove the vehicle to church on Sundays. When it went out on the open road it became a basket case. Know the whole history before you jump at a deal that is too good to be true!

just as a comparison my 2004 gtp car reads 230 000 kilometers and around 4900 hrs run time. I'm assuming a gas car would not be excessively idled like a diesel work truck.
diesel engines in the oil fields in alberta are NEVER shut off in the winter time.

at gm we had a engine mileage to hours conversion factor that we used to approximate hours run. this was needed when reprogramming new clusters when only the mileage was available. google engine hours conversion.
