Hi Eric,
Your engine already has an oil temp sensor. It is located on the oil reservoir at the front of the engine next to the plug that is removed to check the oil level in the reservoir.. It is a 2 wire sensor whose resistance decreases as the engine oil temp increases. If the sensor is out of range the PCM will illuminate the MIL.
Is there some special reason why you are contemplating installing another one?

Sometimes it takes a while for the light to go on upstais and in my case it is starting to lite up some!
I don't know if this will work, but it might be worth a try .
Where the present oil temp sensor is located you might T in a port that you could install an oil temp sending unit and separate gauge that is not connected to any other vehicle wiring.
Fords don't like when we add on addl equip so this has to be completely separate from any other systems.
I am not aware of any companies that offer the kit to do this, but they are out there and maybe someone can direct you to just who may market one of those.
What do you think about trying that?

I thought of that as well and then also thought about the interaction of the various temperature sensors, Water and Oil and their signals to the PCM.
I will probably leave well enough alone. :-)

Eric this could be a stand alone set-up.
Putting a "T" into a line under pressure will not alter anything.
If you get a separate oil temp sending unit with the instructions to wire it to a separate gauge, it should give the oil temp without affecting anything else in the system. I don't know how accurate it would read other than provide the same oil temp rdg as what is presently going to the PCM except it would provide numbers.
The only drawback would be another place for a leak to develop if it were to leak.

This is not on a Ford, but wanted an oil temp gauge on our 8V71 Detroit Diesel. Fortunately it had a drain plug in the bottom of the oil pan as well as one in the side. We installed the temp sensor in the side plug opening. Oil temp runs about same as or slightly warmer than engine water temp, (Auto) Trans temp also runs the about the same
