Fuel Filter

Fuel Filter
I have a 1999 with the 7.3. It has a little hose that comes out the back of the fuel filter housing it runs down to the bottom of the motor and is just open. Is this a overflow or just what is it. I am smelling fuel and it is wet on my oil pan with diesel. Can someone tell me what is causing this.

RE: Fuel Filter
the hose you are looking at is for draining you fuel bowl. this should be done every few month to remove any water trapped by the water seperator that is around your fuel filter. there is a little yellow at the bottom of the bowl on the firewall side it only take 1/4 turn to open it fully and about 20 seconds or so to drain the bowl all the way. be carefull where you do this, it makes a mess that you cannot avoid. the fuel ends up hitting the axel and goes everware. if you open the lever and nothing comes out, you probably have dirt caked up in the end of the hose.

RE: Fuel Filter
Just had the same problem fixed on my 99 F-250 7.3L. The fuel/water seperator drain valve was leaking by. Spitting diesel all over the place. The part is about $55 and $100 to install at the dealer. Problem solved.

RE: Fuel Filter
i've owned a power stroke in one truck or another since '97, and have never heard about this before. the dealer never bothered to tell me, and we've got five 7.3's in our fleet. i've only been a member on this site for two days now and i already love it. i can see i'll learn alot from you guys, and hopefully i'll be able to contribute something back.
thanks,
mike
