Default Mystery Transmission Problem

Hey guys,

First time poster.

My uncle has a 2000 Ford F-350 V-8 Power Stroke Diesel Camper and 4X4 Conversion Van. We've been all over the country in this camper and it has done very well overall. Recently, though, we've had some transmission problems. Here's a rundown.

Initial problem: transmission began shifting gears too often in all gears and then would not engage gears. Speedometer quit working. Diagnosis of faulty "VSS" which was replaced June of '06.

After about 90 miles of driving, the problem returned and the transmission range sensor was replaced August '06.

Present problem: transmission continues to shift gears too often after 90 to 200 miles of driving. After cooling for several hours it works properly again for another length of time. It does not slip nor does the speedometer stop working. At last incident was taken out of overdrive for several miles and when returned to overdrive the problem did not reappear through rest of trip (about 50 miles). The cruise control seems to become unsteady about the time the problem appears. Two transmission specialists say the actual gears in the transmission are working perfectly and that it is some sort of electrical/electronic problem.

We're stumped. Any suggestions?

my best guess is either you have a faulty TFT (trans fluid temp) sensor, or your tranny is just over heating, it will make irratic shifts, and lock up the torque converter to try and cool the tranny down, if it is the TFT all you have to do is pull the pan and replace it, if it just overheats than i would suggest blowing out the lines, and cooler, and see if it helps. if you have a scan tool monitor the TFT pid if the TFT is bad it will say a rediculous number like -40, or something really high, if you have any more questions please ask.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I don't believe we looked in that direction, yet. It does sound plausible, though. We'll follow up with a post after we check that out.

thanks again
