Can anyone tell me about the after market programmers?

I have an 07 250 power stroke and I am wondering if they really do increase mileage. I do not need the extra HP or off the line power just better mileage.

I'm looking at them for my V10. Hypertech looks promising, and the ads have plenty of promise on performance delivery.
