Default Random Stalling Problem

I have a 2004 F250 Super Duty with 85,000 miles. The truck was purchased used with 74,000 miles two years ago and has run well since acquiring. The other day after running errands I stopped and shut the truck off and upon returning less then 5 minutes later I started the truck and it died. Starter would turn over but the engine wouldn't catch, almost like it wasn't getting gas which went on for 10 minutes. Returned to the truck about an hour later and it started right up and has continued to run seamlessly for the past couple of days. Ford specialist said unless it isn't running he couldn't figure out what was wrong, anyone have any ideas on this one?

Sounds like fuel delivery..

When shut off ‘short term’, fuel pressure remains in the fuel rail available to supply the injectors.
So,, when it started, then died, available fuel was then exhausted. If no pump run, fuel to pressurize the rail system would be missing.
Then, once the pump does run, all is well...

On a no start, pay attention to if you hear the fuel pump cycle (timed run) when the ignition is switched On.

If no,, have a helper available and while they switch the key to On (no cranking) at the very same time, give the fuel tank bottom a hefty blow with the flat of your hand.. It has to be done right as the key is cycle to On.
If the pump starts up,, the pump is failing....

Thanks for the feedback! Not being a mechanic is this a possible indication of a fuel pump going bad or could it be something else? As indicated this only happened the one time and has not done it again. If a early indication of fuel pump failure would rather replace the pump (or what ever else it might be) before I get stuck someplace.

Understand,,
Fuel pump fails aren’t all that uncommon, but should be proven as cause so your not changing out good parts and the costs involved..

They can either fail all at once, or can be intermittent for some time..Yours seems to follow what I’d suspect given the start/die, then runs completely fine. But certainly not the only reason for a no start. The fact that it started, then died would follow a pump not starting up. As well as no check engine light illuminated, meaning most engine management component failures tend to set a code/ CEL,, with/without a start,, but not always..
Fuel restrictions like filter, generally will affect top end drivability or a flat throttle affect at speed. But a filter change (done ?) sometimes can point to fuel quality issues that can damage a pump, and affect spec supply. But, since it runs well, after a event, I’d be looking at the pump and that it runs when it should..
With that, quite a few times as the pumps start to fail, you’ll be able to audibly tell the difference if your listening for it. Sometimes a test gauge hooked up to the fuel rail can help diagnose a failing pump if the overal drivability seems poor.
But if the pump motor doesn’t start, it could be the fuel pump relay, PCM contol (PCM controls the ground/activation of the relay) or the pump itself.. This is where the tank ‘slap’ can quickly rule out all other failure possibilities. Doesnt always work, but does quite often..
