Ford F-250 & Ford F-350The heavier duty full sized trucks from Ford, offering bigger, more powerful engines and drivetrains for the abuse they may go through in the workplace.
My wife and I just purchased a 2006 F350 Dually Diesel to pull our toy hauler. At some point someone did some upgrades to the truck. Specifically they updated the tailgate to a newer one. I know that because it has the Super Duty at the bottom of the tailgate. It also has the pull out step and fold out handle. The issue is, the thing is heavy as hell. I did my research and ordered a deezee assist and while I was waiting on it's arrival I started watching a bunch of installation videos so I would be prepared. Today I go out to examine ours and I forsee a problem. My understanding is that there is a threaded portion at the bottom of the tailgate where you are to first remove something and then screw in what would be the point at which the hydraulic would attach.
The issue on mine is that it just has an opening. There is nothing there to remove and there is no threading inside of it. At first I thought maybe I screwed up because I ordered the assist that goes to a 2006 f350, not one that is specific to the year of the tailgate. However the more I look the more it appears that all of the assists have a connection point that would screw into that same area. The point where it would connect to the truck I don't see any issues. However the point where the other end would connect to the tailgate I see the problem.
I have attached some pics but I am not sure if they will show up since it is my first post. I am looking for help here to see if I am crazy or if I have some other option to deal with the weight of this tailgate.
The kit should have had a nutsert/nutsert install tool that inserts a threaded nut into the blank hole on the tailgate. Then, the bracket with the pivot ball bolts in/through the nutsert. When the tailgate cable upper bolt is removed, the other pivot ball bracket bolts in behind the cable attachment (upper torx bolt)
Ford/OE later SD's use a (passenger side) replacement lower tailgate pivot socket with a arm extending off the backside. The hyd cylinder goes behind the bed metal and isn't visible. The lower pivot attaches to a lower body seam that has a existing included mounting hole . Being an 06, not sure if the lower hole would be there..
