Default Hole in Engine?

I was driving home the other night and my car died. It's a 2003 zx3, it has about 42,000 miles on it. When I brought this to the dealership they said I had a hole (size of a baseball) in the bottom of my engine. What could of caused this?
Could a cylinder or piston driven through the engine block?
Any ideas would help. Thanks!
