Default melted the battery cable

79 400m now has an ignition switch problem...stuck to on position..Before this happened the battery cable would get real hot ,real fast, while cranking. Wondering what things can cause this. ( battery cable hottest right at solinoid connection).
Anybody know what makes the cable hot??

ok I replaced the starter ..it checked to be burnt up probably was turning hard and drawing lots of amps thus all the heat ..starter wontr stop ..only way to stop it is to remove battery cable...guessing switch is defective ( key) but it wasent before could all the cranking I hax to do cause the switch to bad???
