Default '01 Windstar to '05 Freestar Transmission?

Hi Guys:

My wife has an '01 Windstar which has succumb to the salt and calcium
which they use on the roads up here in Ontario. The driveline is perfect
but the body is done.

My friend has a '05 Freestar which is MINT, other than the tranny is shot.

My wife drives a total of about 5 miles to and from work, and I can't
justify buying her a new Escape, and neither can she

Anyway, does anyone know if the transmission from the Windstar will fit
and operate properly in the Freestar? Everything I read shows that they
both use the AX4N tranny?

Thanks!!

Don't see why not. Everything I have seen shows that it's been the same from 1994-2007 except for the name change from AX4N to 4F50N in 2001. Ford's parts web page (FORDPARTS.COM) refers to the 4F50N designation for the 2001-2003 Windstar and 2004-2007 Freestar transmission and hard parts.

Thanks CS! The way I look at, if there was any reasonable doubt, I wouldn't try it, but an ex-ford mechanic said he"ll take out the Windstar tranny and install it in the Freestar for $500, so I'm willing to gamble. If anyone said it wouldn't work, then I would bail.

Thanks again!
