2005 Ford Freestar SE Fuel Sensor

It is possible that the fuel module in the tank is faulty, but it might be a good idea to check for a broken wire or poor connection in the circuit between the tank unit and the dash, considering there is a complete loss of signal.

So we are on the same page,
generally a sensor sends a signal to the computer,
In this case there is a reostat (variable type resistor) , the fuel gauge sending unit, that sends a voltage signal to the fuel gauge in the dash. If that voltage signal is absent usually no reading is displayed. Checking it begins wherever you choose at the tank or the gauge or anywhere in between . It could be possible you might need to drop the tank ,but we always try to check the plugs and wiring/connections before doing that if it can be avoided.
I don't believe there is any access point to the top of the tank without lowering it.
