cam shaft position sensor/synchroniser issues

cam shaft position sensor/synchroniser issues
i am replacing sensor and synchro shaft on a ford freestar 2004 4.2l engine. I need to set it to top dead center before i begin the repair. I know of a few ways of finding it using the #1 cylinder but is there any way to do it by aligning some marks on the exterior of the engine, or on the crank pulley?? Any help will save me some troubles... thanx guys i am new here.... -kris
