Default '03 Ranger Transmission Won't Engage

Hey guys, first post.

My 2003 ranger 2x4 starts up fine. When I shift into Drive, it won't engage. Reverse works, 1st and 2nd gear works. It's just Drive that won't work.

When I shift into Drive, the tranny (assumingly) makes a higher-pitched whirring sound; it's pretty faint, not very loud at all. When I rev the engine up, it barely lurches foreward, as if I have a whole lot of clutch in or something.

Anyone have an idea what this might be?

This is most likely an internal transmission failure. You may get lucky by changing the filter and pan gasket, but sounds to me like you need a tranny shop.
