Default 1996 Ford Ranger, revving up all the time. any suggestion please

I have a 1996 ford ranger (4 cylinder, stick shift). It has been constantly revving up. This happens at neutral, any gears. I dont have to give any throttle, but the engine is running at full speed.

I took it to the local goodyear shop, they cleaned the throttle plate and the 'idle air controller', and its made it worse.

Any suggestions, please ?

yea , what the goodyear shop did , is what you do when it wont idle , have you checked your throttle cable to see if its sticking holding the throttle plate open ???? , Open the hood , an with the truck idleing can you close the throttle linkage by hand. ??? , you might have to pull off the intake hose so you can see if the throttle plate ( butterfly ) is not closing ??? If its the cable , there cheap like $12.00 bucks I think , Dont bother trying to lube it . Also I've seen where the linkage on top of the throttle plate will get dry , an hold throttle open , real easy to clean an lube... An also where the linkage hooks to the gas pedal in the cab , I've seen them get hung up an cause a fast idle . Let us know what you find > ,,, Good luck

Yeppers, and I've seen cruise control cable do the same (on chevy though). Also any vacuum leak will also do same.

I had a similar problem. It was a hole in the catalytic converter.

The check engine light came on friday evening, driving back home from work.

I took the ranger to the Goodyear shop again. They said that the 'Idle Valve controller had gone bad'. It was 140 bucks to replace this.

However, the problem is still not fixed. The engine continues to rev like crazy. i am kind of now lost as to what the next step is.

I have now spent a total of 220 bucks and the problem has not been fixed.

Whats the ole saying -- Third times a charm ,, hope that holds true in this case,, You need to go back to GOODYEAR an get your MONEY BACK !!!!! , if they FIXED IT an its still doing the same thing !!!, Do you by chance have the codes from the puther ??, Iam still leaning towards the throttle binding up --. an or the throttle body being worn out ..Did you check it yourself ( if you know what Iam suggesting you look at , if not thats ok I understand ) or have GOODYEAR check it ?

Default Sporatic Revving Issue

My friend has a 94 ranger 4 cylinder which also has revving issues. These happen sporadically while driving, clutching, or in neutral. Sometimes shifting, or tapping the gas will make it stop, or stopping and shutting off the motor. Any suggestions?

If the (TPS) Throttle position Sensor loses its ground or the sensor is defective it can cause the engine to respond as if wide open throttle. You might want to check the TPS and its ground circuit.
