Default 1998 ranger

I have a automatic ranger with a 2.5 goes in reverse good but to get it in drive you have to pull it in low give it some gas then it will engage and work good until you take it out of drive any ideas? Thanks

Since you did not say,
How is the trans fluid level , did you check that?
When was the last time the trans fluid and filter were changed? This question doesn't necessarily mean changing the fluid and filter now will correct the problem.
Will wait for some addl info before attempting to offer any suggestions.
