2003 2.3L Ranger fan clutch
Does anyone know if it is possible to remove the mechanical fan clutch and still keep the pulley for the water pump? I removed the stock fan and now have an electric fan, but can't seem to figure out how to get rid of the stock fan's clutch. It seem as if it comes off with the pulley.
I didn't care for the fact that it was 11 degrees out and my fan was spinning. There is no need for it at these temps that we have in my area quite often during the winter months. The stock fan is just robbing hp and fuel milleage, as well as adding un-needed strain to the water pump and engine while making the engine take longer to come up to temp. With the electric fan you do not have this un-needed strain and my heat works a couple minutes faster. The milleage also has improved slightly. I have the thermostat on the electric fan set at 200 degrees and I have only had it come on twice in the two weeks that I've had it. There is just no need to have a fan spinning all the time in this climate. I'm sure it will run more in the warmer months, but it will do so without causeing any extra wear on my engine and waterpump, as well as not robbing me of fuel milleage.
If it does come off with the pulley, is it possible to remove the phillips screws on the front of the clutch to at least remove the front half and the internals of it? I can see a seam in the clutch, that tells me that it's two seperate pieces, but will removing these screws allow me to remove part of it as well as the internal pieces? I will never use it again and it just kind of bugs me being there.

Since the last post I have become aware that the stock fan clutch is removable by loosining the nut between the pulley and clutch. I had a tech look it up at work and found out that the pulley is pressed on and requires a puller to remove it.
the fan clutch parts still on there aren't robbing any additional power, are they? you are just wanting to get the remaining piece off just for peace of mind, correct? i am looking to swap out to an electric fan to free up a lil HP and help out on the gas mileage. what brand/kind of e-fan did u go w/? thanks
Being that the clutcy assy. weighs close to the same as the fan, if not more, I'm sure it'll help a bit. It sure won't hurt anything. I went with the flex-a-lite FLX-30. It comes with the thermostatic switch and everything needed to hook it up. I also purchased the manual switch and added it just in case the thermostat ever fails. I bent a small piece of stainless in a 90 and mounted the powersteering bottle to it. I only used on of the holes and it is very sturdy.
