Default 86 Ranger problems "need help"

Hello,
this is my very fist post and my first Ford. O.K, I bought this 1986 Ford Ranger for $300 that doesn't run. It is fuel injected and is a 2.9L/V6. 2wheel drive, Longbed, and a standard cab. The guy that I bought it from said he was going down the road when all of a sudden the truck dies. Later he tries to start it and it starts then dies. What do you think the problem is? could it be the fuel pump? Is there two fuel pumps on this truck?
I really need help with this and suggestions, Thanks.

There is only 1 fuel pump. I would try that for sure. Also replace the fuel filter. There is a relay that controls the fuel pump. Look at that. Before you buy a new fuel pump, hook the wires straight to the battery and see if it runs.

I would also invest in a repair manual. Vene if it is the Haynes at the Pep Boys. That is what need to do as well. This way you can see right where the components are without us confusing you trying to describe where it is at.

Hello,
I have got a Haynes manual and it say that there is two fuel pumps: One high output in the tank, and one low output outside of the tank. If the one inside the tank goes out will it still work? If the one outside of the tank goes out will it still work? So I found a inertia switch, I tested it with a power light (the thing that checks to see if there is power and it lights up) and the light did not light up, so could it be the relay? The inertia switch shuts off the fuel pump in the event of a crash.
