Default 99 ranger idles too fast when cold

It's a 4x4 3 liter flex fuel v-6 with auto trans. Is there a common problem that these trucks have that would cause this? It's my son's truck and he's hours away so when I get a chance to look at it I want to cover all the bases I can. He says it idles very fast for a while when he starts it in the morning. Slows down somewhat when the ac kicks on. Says it's better after it runs a bit. What should I look for besides cable or linkage issues?

Thanks.

Don't know what the link on the word 'auto' in my post is about. I didn't put it there. Looks like German to me.
