Default Clutch Tool

Hello, I'm doing a a clutch for my girlfriends dad. This is actually my first rear wheel drive clutch job.

The vehicle is an 88 Ford Ranger GT with a 2.9L V6. I hear you need a specific tool to remove the clutch cable/line. It actually looks more like a cable, but I hear they are hydraulic. Can you remove the line with out the tool? If so how? Can the tool be bought at like shucks or any parts store?

my neighbor changed m clutch without using the tool, he just unbolted the transmission and pushed it back with the driveshaft connected and changed the clutch and slave clylinder. i thought he was crazy but he sure did it and it took him a lot less time than doing it the ordinary way.

your clutch is either, models were made with both hydraulic and cable so if your predicting its cable than it very well may be a cable to figure it out look for the fluid resevior it will be place on the drivers side close to the fire wall around the same area as the brakes master cylinder and the brake fluid resvior if it is not existing look around the engine a little more for a small white plastic cylinder if not it will be a cable no special tolol is needed for the job usually but when replacing the clutch a cable replacement may be in ones best interest due to streching so either way it should be removed and checked not kept on when the clutch is being replaced this will also cause damage to the cable along with the transmission seals and dirt may enter to easily causeing later on problems with more than the clutch my truck required a 10 mill wrench and a pair of pliers to remove so it should be to difficult best of luck and let me know if it has the hydraulic or not and i can give a little more advice

I looked for the resivour on the fire wall, but didn't see anything. The line is black and plastic. that's why I thaught it was cable, but I'm not sure. This whole setup is kinda wierd to me, I'm used hydraulics that you just unbolt the slave and it detatches. No bleeding required. So I've been a bit nervous. There isn't much of a white cylinder, but a line going in and a little white ring thing that might be holding it in. Let me know what you think.

ok well shes sounding like shes a cable soo im thinking just remove the cable from the clutch pedal instead and when you remove the tranny make sure not to hurt the cable coming out when you get the tranny off just take off the clutch and everything should be smooth from there dont be nervous to take it apart and get a lil dirty a screw up is a screw up and can always be fixed if somethin for the cable becomes damaged it shouldnt cost more than a few bucks for the replacement peice but after that just throw the tranny back in her attach the cable again and go on your merry way that white peice should just be a brace so the inner cable can move without the outer casing moving so dont worry about it just let me know how it all goes looking forward to hearing from you

how could you push the transmission back with the driveshaft on and changed the clutch?

that line is actually made of steel, but where it plugs into the transmission there is a little white round plastic clip, all i did was take a flathead screwdriver and pryed the clip back alon the line, don't use excessive force though, it's only plastic, then the line should just pull right out, it may seem tricky at first but keep playing with it, you'll see what i mean, you also might have to disconnect the downpipes from the exhaust manifolds because the transmission won't come out if you don't, beleive me i did it four times in my 92 haha

it's also definately a hydraulic clutch, and to put the line back in, simply just push the line back in and it sould snap in, i was wrong about the prying back part, i just remember that u have to push in on that clip with a flathead or if u can, two flatheads on each side of the line, just push in on the white part of the hose goin into the transmission, you'll understand after that
