Default engine backfiring

I just rebuilt my engine from the heads up on a1983 2.8 v6ford ranger and I believe I put everything together correctly. I removed the air pump and some of the smog plumbing. When I tried to start the engine fo the first time it backfired out of the top of the stock carbuerator. when it was rebuilti made sure the ebgine was at t.d.c. for cyl. #1 when i put the distributor back in, and all the plug caps are goin to the right spark plugs.I don't think the distributor is 180 degrees off, I don't see how it could be. Can anybody give me some ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Always go back to basics. Double check #1 is at TDC and ready to fire. Verify that the rotor is pointing a cylider #1 position (11 O-Clock on the distributer). Then double check your wiring from there. The distributer rotates clockwise. Did you remove the timing gears at all?
