Default How can my truck be missing the EGR valve?

I own a 1993 4.0 V6 / 5 Speed Ranger - 143K miles.

2 weeks ago I noticed a misfire occasionally on acceleration--almost unnoticeable. Slowly it began to get worse--stuttering but only on acceleration. It ran smoothly at idle and at any constant speed. I bought some carb/injector cleaner and spark plugs intending to fix this quickly. Days later (after most of the injector cleaner had time to work) I went to check my plugs and wires (replaced just 2 years earlier when I tuned it up prior to finally replacing the mass airflow sensor) and readily noticed the oil filler cap missing. I found it within the engine compartment and assumed it was the culprit. I found out the next day the problem persisted. I then checked the plugs and found them clean and dry. The truck still ran smoothly most of the time, so I discounted any spark plug issues. An auto parts store worker suggested my exhaust converter may be plugged up (eh, no) or to check my vacuum lines--they seemed in order.

Stumped, I searched online for an answer and found an article about the DPFE sensor. It matched my truck's symptoms to a tee including the lack of engine light illumination. I planned to replace these two components before having to take it to a shop (why pay someone to do what I can do?).

Now I have a secondary problem: I cannot find my EGR valve or DPFE sensor!! I have seen many diagrams showing the two mounted on the driver's side of the intake manifold, but mine are not to be found. I looked high and low for longer than I care to admit. I even went to a certain auto parts store and asked two employees to find them for me--they could not! My next plan is to drive to a Ford dealership to have the service department point out these components. Again, the truck's performance is degrading daily but still no engine light. I have not stalled yet but it is getting hard to keep up with traffic.

How can my truck be missing the EGR valve? Is it located elsewhere?

Any insight would help, thanks.

stuttering but only on acceleration.
At a 143K miles, it sounds like you're in need of a fuel filter replacement.

Most 1993 4.0L pushrod motors did not have an EGR valve. I believe only california emission vehicles had them, the other 49 state vehicles passed emmisions without them.
