Default IFS to solid axle

I am interested on going from an IFS to a solid axle on a 2006 4x4 to make it better for some serious off-roading. Does anybody know how involved this is and if it is better to go coil-over or leaf springs in the front? Also some options for the steering for the conversion. Should I buy a new axle or will one off of a 2nd or 3rd generation ranger work. Anybody know of any web sites that might clue me in? Any info would help greatly.
