Need more power from 3.0L
I just bought a 2000 Ranger a month or so ago. I was wondering if there is anything you can do to give it a little more power? I have done the usual tune up and that helped a little but just looking for a little more. Wans't sure if you guys may know of some little tricks to do to help it out a little. Thanks!!

Ya it's called a V-8, but you are stuck as I am with the fact that Ford last produced the 5.0 in the Explorer in 99 and we can not pass the new emissions with an older motor. Short of that there is a blower kit, it runs about $3000. I have not found much for cold air kits (not really needed as the rangerhas a good colder access already)or a bigger air cleaner to throttle body tube, seen some guys have made them themselves but not much on the market. There are some mods, some more funky than others, one that I would not do is to fool the computer to think the engine is running coolder by placing a resistor in the temp sensor, the computer will up the timing curve and mixture, but detonation is a real possibility. The one I did make (it does cause the engine to use a little more fuel when is cold out) change the factory thermostat from 192 to 180, there is a 160 as well, but I figure that was a little too cool for winter time. I have not do it but as always a better flowing exhaust.....However, I beleive that to get the most you have to go from the heads on down, and that's very pricey......The last one that is supposed to help with air flow in the upper rpms, is to modify the plastic housing on the Mass air sensor so it does not block up the intake tube from air filter to throttle body, I have not do this one either..... I just use the gas pedal when needed, the engine does come alive around 3900 rpm.
