this could be the simplest to a complete transfercase problem although id ned more info as do you have locking hubs this could be a causing problem at the simplest is the shifter to transfer for 2wd to 4wd electronic or manual(button or stick) is the truck manual or automatic does it make any noises when transfer is wanted so on so on if you can think of anything that might show some sign of problem please post and ill assist as much as possible

I have only owned this vehicle for about 6 weeks and it only has 18,000 miles. 4x4 will work ok 1 minute and not work in a little while. I have noticed a clicking behind dash as in a relay when working. no click when no 4x4. no light either. Truck does'n have hubs.

Alright well im thinking this has to do with a wiring problem could be a shorting fuse it could be a wire shorting out relay malfunctioning i cant tell you much i know this isnt a transfer case problem this is soundin like a relay problem or a problem in the ecu id go to the dealer and see what they have to say about it because i cant do alot with wiring i dont like it at all and its all a mess so yea as i said your best bet is to go to a dealer or shop and have them take a look
