Default Ford 8.8 rear axle

Hey guys and gals ive got a 2005 sportrac with a noisy rear diff, a buddy of mine has a older 8.8 from a ranger witch is spring over the axle (mine is spring under) now im wondering if i can use the gears and bearings out of his and put them in my axle housing, would this work do i need a overhaul kit or bearings. I know its knot the best way to go but money is low... Thank you for reading

Hi Nate,
How did you determine the noise is coming from the differential ?
A defective wheel bearing can generate a noise that if not pinned down can seem like it is coming from the differential. So can an output bearing of trans or transfer case.

If you removed the front driveshaft and placed the vehicle in 4WD do you still get the noise?
