Default Fuel Gauge

I have a 2004 Ford Explorer Sport Trac with 2WD and a 4.0L V6. The fuel gauge sometimes reads correctly and sometimes the low fuel light comes on and the gauge drops to no fuel. I can't figure out whether this is a defective sending unit or a short (possibly bad ground) or something else. I don't know if this could have anything to do with it but my interior courtesy lights went out about the same time.

Thanks

Jim
