Default 88 Taurus Stalls when cold/coolant loss

Hello all, newbie here. Hope someone can help ( I tried the search and couldn't find anyhting)

I have an 88 ford taurus 3.8L that my father in law gave me. He stated at start up the car would stall after a couple of seconds, will start right back up, then stall again.,after that the car ran like a dream. We tried replacing the tfi module, but the problem is still there. He gave me the car about 3-4 months ago, I let it sit in my garage since. Now I need the car to commute to work, It does the same thing except it takes about 5- 6 times to keep it running on it's own. Might run for a minute or two in between that time but will stall. After the 5th or 6th , it will stay on with a lil hesitation. But once warm it runs fine. I knew the tfi problem was only when warmed up but I felt I had to give it a try.

Last night I turned on the car and decided to spray carb/choke cleaner. I disconnected the intake hose at the air box.,., While I held the throttle open a bit, I sprayed more of a mist like spray into the tube. I did this like 3-4 times for about 5 seconds each time.,,after a bit it smelled like something had spilled on the exhaust and was burning.,,it had to be the carb/choke cleaner as the car never did this before now. Question is,how'd it get there? One theory is, could the intake manifold gasket be worn? I'm thinking while the car is cold the gasket isn't sealing good, but after it's warmed and the gasket expands, then it seals up.Where else could the carb cleaner escape from after I sprayed into the tube? after I warmed the car, I restarted and didn't have any stalling problems ( just a lil hesitation) but I am still thinking it's the gasket.,,also my father in law called and told me to keep an eye on the coolant level. He said he used to have to fill it every weekend or every other week.,.,hmmmm now I really think it's an intake gasket or head gasket.,.,What do you guys think?

I'd really hate to get rid of this car.,.,is was extremely well maintained and has only 70,000 miles on it (babied miles at that)

Thanks,
Ed
