Default 97 Taurus Brake Problems

Hi

I have a 97 Ford Taurus and it was working fine until a day ago when the brakes don't work so well anymore... I put some brake fluid (it was clearly needed because the level was really low) but that doesn't seem to solve my issue with the brakes... I really have to press really hard for the car to stop... Someone has any idea what would be the problem (pump brake, pads?) and how much money would that probably cost to have it fixed?

Thanx a lot, I appreciate it.

If the fluid level is that low then there are two possibilities. Low or worn out brake pads/shoes, or hydraulic fluid leak. If the latter were the case then you would definitely know.
Your problem is probably worn out pads. Approx cost $150 to have shop install factory style ceramics. Job is pretty simple though if you attempt yourself it would probably only cost $85-$100 for pads and rotors.

If the brake fluid dropped low enough, then air might have entered the system. That could explain a change in braking over a short time (i.e. 1 day) and why adding fluid didn'timprove things. After you replace the brakes or repair the leak, be sure to completely bleed the system so that no air remains.

I had the same thing happen to me yesterday. I have a 1999 Taurus, pulled up to a stop sign and no brakes, no pedal. I checked there was no fluid leaks. I had rotor turned and new pad installed within the last year. Any ideas?
