The dome light inside the car has a separate push-button for each of the two lights to turn them on. When the car is parked and we get in, the dome light on the left(passenger side) is on. This happens sporadically, sometimes once a week, sometimes more often. Also, when we turn off the car we get this message "System Off to Save Battery" not sure if they are connected. I am trying to find out why the dome light would just turn on with no one in the car to push the button.

Not knowing what year vehicle you have , some later models have a BCM (Body control Module) that controls the interior light systems. It sounds like that module is acting up and if that is the case it requires replacement..
