Default Ignition Switch

1998 ford taurus. Ignition keys are lost. What do I have to do to replace the switch? and what about the programable keys? I don't have any idea what to do!

Take proof of ownership along with the VIN to your local dealer and they will cut you new keys. You might get a locksmith to do the same. Other than that, it is a real PITA to get the ignition cylinder out without damaging the steering column. If you can get the lock pin to depress far enough the cylinder will come out. A hammer and small punch have been known to work for this. There is a small hole in the lower steering column trim that you can access the locking pin on the cylinder.

Actually I believe you mean the key tumbler piece. One of the procedures was to pry off the outer slot with a screwdriver, drill out the outer portion of the lock assy, after you disconnected the battery and waited for at least 2 minutes ,then carefully turn the remaining part to the on position ,depress the pin located under the steering column next to the screws that hold the plastic covers on and remove the remaining pieces of the lock assy. The replacement assy is just inserted and make sure the end of the new tumbler assy lines up with the part in the steering column in the on position. If you had programmable keys............ Have Ford do the job!
