Default Is my 99 taurus safe with leaking PS fluid?

My 99 Taurus started making noises coming from the power steering. The fluid smelled burnt and had bubbles in it. Will this cease my engine if it fails or just make the steering harder? We are down to one car and drive 70 miles a day to work/back in another city. I know the ps pump probably needs replaced, but since this happened on a Sunday night and we NEED to not miss work, will it be OK if I keep pushing more fluid into it for a while. We actually have an 800 mile trip to make next week too. I can handle the steering being harder at slower speeds if that is all that will happen, but I don't want to be on the Interstate and have the car all of a sudden DIE. Help.
