Default 1978 Mercury Zephyr Part Identification

Hello,
I am new to the forum here, but was wondering if I could get some help identifying a part on my new to me Mercury Zephyr. Its a 1978 wagon and has been swapped with a 302. I have plans this summer to clean up the engine bay a bit. If anybody knows what this part is and what it does I'd really appreciate any information. It looks like a canister with a cable going into the front of it, and and handful of wires coming out of the back of it. Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the site.,

Aftermarket cruise control.. There should be a magnetic pickup on a bracket and 2 magnets affixed to the forward driveshaft area as well. And a switch panel on the interior/turn signal arm etc if it’s still there..

Thanks so much for the response. That makes a lot of sense now. It does have an aftermarket cruise control system mounted in on the dash. Would the metal box with the fins below it be the voltage regulator? Or another part of the cruise control? Thank you.
I have a better picture of the finned box if you need another angle!
