Default 1999 7.3 wont start

Hello folks; I am new to this forum and have to pick your brains.
I recently purchased a 1999 F350 7.3 diesel. Just prior to picking up truck owner said he was driving it and truck just died on him under power. Said it seemed like truck ran out of gas.
He said he had it towed to his mechanic who told him it was a fuel pump.
So he had it replaced and I picked up the truck and it has ran flawlessly for over 6oo miles.
Today I was driving and suddenly it died under power again. Seems like it is not getting any fuel.
Engine turns over strong but no ignition.

I did notice afte this happened the "wait to start" light stopped coming on when I insert the key and turn to the on position.

Any ideas of what this may be before I take it to a Ford dealer?

Welcome to the site..

What should be done is the sytems PIDS (scanner information display) should be checked to look for and verify a Tach signal, Injector pulse, HPOP min. pressure, IPR, just to name a few..

This is generally what needs to happen,, The 7.3 needs 500lbs of high pressure oil minimum during cranking for injection pressure, 100 RPM minimum during cranking, and a supplied Tach signal for the PCM/IDM (computer and injector driver module) to activate or pulse the injector solenoids.

The engine would or should of, already had a replacement CMP (cam position sensor) either under recall or sometimes just replaced by a owner or shop. They were a problem part when original.

Does the tach needle 'bounce' when cranking the engine over? Do you hear the fuel pump run/buzz when you cycle the key 'ON' each time?

Another check would be to remove fuel filter housing cap and look to see if it's full. Drain the housing with the drain lever and cycle the key on (need a helper) and whitness/see if it fills quickly. Another fuel problem was, they have cylinder shaped micro screens 'inside' the tank fuel module. They like to plug/restrict, but usually you'll have a flat throttle performance problem at some point..

Could be IDM, IPR (injection oil pressure regulator) and hard to know exactly where to guide you without some hands on time, and with limited time.
