Default 2005 Freestyle - common CVT problem?

A friend just showed me a problem with his 2005 Freestyle. It has the 3.0 liter engine with CVT tranny.
It's making a sound like it has a broken exhaust gasket when in Park (spitty and rumbly), but when you move the transmission into Drive the sound goes away.
Is this some problem with the CVT? I did some preliminary searching and that's what I came up with. Not encouraging...

Do you get the same response if the vehicle is put into reverse?

Thanks for responding Hanky. The answer is yes, the sound disappears when you shift out of park, either drive or reverse.
