Default 2007 Escape - reverse lights always on

Hi,

The title pretty much says it all, we have a 2007 Ford Escape which has just had it's engine replaced (that's another horror story) a few weeks ago. This morning we noticed that the reverse lights are on constantly regardless of what gear we're in.

Any thoughts as to what the problem is?

All cars have a switch that powers up the back-up lamps when the transmission is put in reverse. Most of the cars would have this switch mounted on the transmission itself, but some may have it on the gear selector lever. You either have a stuck switch (very likely) or a wiring problem (quite unlikely, but not impossible). The senior people here should be the ones to confirm this for your particular car, or, if you have a service manual, you can check this yourself. HTH ...

Sounds like a good diagnosis to me .

Wires are probably pinched together somewhere, probably done when they replaced the engine. The transmission range selector closes the circuit once its in reverse which then sends power to the reverse lights. Take a look at all the wires under the hood that plug into the transmission, look for any wires smashed under something. Probably going to have to remove the whol air cleaner box assembly to get a good look down there.
