Default 2014 Escape - 5 button keyfob programming help

Hi - I bought an extra 5 button keyfob for my 2014 Ford Escape 2.0 Titanium. Push button start. I changed the battery as was recommended on a video.
I have watched two different videos on how to program it with the two original keyfobs that still work but am not having any luck.
One video talks about a "pocket" in the center console under the cigarette lighter. There is nothing under mine. There is a shelf next to it that's a built in cubby. I tried placing the new keyfob in there in multiple ways and even the small space above the cigarette lighter/power port, and tried the unlocking x3, brake, locking x3, brake, press power ignition button. None of that worked.
On the steering column there is a picture of a key with circle lines around it. I held it next to that several ways and doing the above procedure, that didn't work either. I think this is where we put the remote if the remote battery is dead to get the car started.
We double checked that we put the new battery in correctly and that it has proper voltage. Picture is of my remote type. This is my original one.
Any help is appreciated.

Center console "cubby" next to and above the cigarette light/power port. No pocket anywhere else in the console
