460 head gasket problem

Default 460 head gasket problem

I need a 460 expert. I blew out a head gasket on the left bank. Had the head surfaced and checked for damage. Block was decked a couple years ago. Used a fel pro gasket and the exisitng head bolts (1978 model). I assembled and started and it run rough. So I checked the compression in all four cylinders. I have 0 in no.5, o in no.6, 60lbs in no. 7 and 0 in no.8. Pistons have total seal rings. Valves seem to be sealing and I had the head checked. Heads torqued to 140lbs. This is the second time for this repair as I think ruined the first head gasket during assembly. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions. Is this a noted problem on 460's. Do i need to go to studs instead of head bolts? Do you think the head bolts are stretched and are not holding? Compression on the right bank is 125, 125, 130 and 135. Anyone help?

I'd consider going with the head studs. They're alot more reliable and they'll give you a much better torque reading. Its never a good idea to use the original head bolts because they stretch over time and mileage. If your heads have alot of miles on them... its possible that carbon build-up is causing your valves NOT to seat against the head completely.. thus killing your compression. My dads truck had that problem at about 120, 000 miles.. (too much city driving according to the mechanic).
