5.0 cylinder head failure
Hi Hank, It started with a check engine light and a rough idle. Took it to the shop and they told me that there’s a loss of compression in number 8 cylinder at only 70psi. The other cylinders are at 110psi. It’s losing compression on the exhaust side. Ford said it’s extremely rare and told me that if number 8 cyl is gone number 4 cyl will not be long behind it and gave me quote for $9000 cad to repair. I contacted a machine shop and they are flat out rebuilding cylinder heads on the 5.0. In fact they call it Coyote days because of how many F150 5.0’s cylinder heads they are be building. Ford says it’s very rare but I know 2 others personally that’s had the same thing happen.
Some auto parts places will handle rebulding engine heads, might pay to check around. Don't waste you your time on discount stores, you need to go to places like NAPA and they should be able to direct you to who will do the job.
There are places listed in the advertising section of trade magazines that sell exchange heads, will see if I can locate some.
