1990 E350 168K: when turning switch on; glow plug solenoid (I guess that is what it is called; mounted on aft end of engine) clicks on, then 2 seconds later clicks off.

The only way engine will start is if I turn on & off about 15 times (each time holding for about 2 seconds).

any ideas?

 

possible needs a new relay

 

Did not want to buy one & install if that was not the case; becauseinstalled electrical products are not returnable.

Right on: glow plug (solenoid type) relay. $150 from Ford, so I went to the recycle yard & got one for $35.00; cleared up the problem. Thanks for the input.
