Default '88 f150 dies when put in reverse

Just bought a 1988 f150 and it needs some work. It idles well in neutral and park, runs well in drive, but when I shift it into reverse the engine dies. Any ideas on what I should check?

I would start by very carefully shaking (gently) the wiring under the hood and making a very close examination of the loom (especially underneath) where it comes over to the engine from the inner fender. These were very prone to rubbing through the tape and shorting out there.
Good luck, and let us know.

I replaced the idle control valve and I haven't had an issue with it since, thanks

IAC, and usually cleaning the throttle body/plate of collected goo will help with idle stability..
