Default Any help would be appreciated!

I have a 94 ford ranger that just cut out on me in the middle of the road. Just died. No power at all. I got a jump and it started up but then kept wanting to cut out. spit and sputtered all the way home - backfired too. if i didn't keep accelerator and brake even at light it would cut out. Any ideas what might be wrong?
