Default Black light help

I'm trying to put a black light into my ranger. I've already stripped the outlet side of the power cord, connected the positive part of the cord to the positive terminal and the negative to an unpainted piece of metal, yet when I ran it through a voltmeter, nothing went through. A little help here?

Are you using a 12vdc incadesent or a 12vdc floresent light (which will work) or are you tryuing to use a 115vac light (which will not work without an inverter) on a 12vdc system?
