High Idle
I have a 96 explorer 6 cly... heres my problem when I start it. It will idle at around 900 rpm... I put in gear (auto) and touch the gas it jumps up to 1500 rpm and stays there.. its getting harder to stop.. I can put it back in park and it goes back down to 900 rpm.. Please help its driving my wife crazy... Thanks for your time
Before we go off the deep end, is it possible for you to have the vehicle checked for any history codes in the computer. Places like Autozone will do this free of charge.
If there are any in the PCM (computer) it might provide some direction.
Can you do this?

Thanks found it.. had it checked by a scanner and it came up with two codes.. one is p0302.. it says cylinder 2 misfire detected
p0420.. it says catalyst system effinicency below threshold {bank 1}
does that sound like a idle problem what does these codes mean and how to repair them.. Thanks for your time

I believe there is more than one problem.
Working back, the catalyst code is affected by the misfire .
The misfire could be caused by a bad spark plug, coil or injector.
The high idle problem is possibly caused by the idle air control valve getting wrong information and responding to it.
A big vacuum leak could cause the hi idle , but it would be high all the time not OK in park or neutral. Last but not least a defective throttle position sensor could be sending wrong info to the PCM (powertrain control module, computer) which tells the idle air control to increase engine speed when put into drive.
This is one of those situations where a lot more info is needed before a definite diagnosis can be offered.
A scan tool that can get engine data is called for here.
