Default Screech sound when turn my key instead of turning on

My 2012 edge 2.0L will Sometimes when I turn my key it does a loud screech instead of starting been doing it occasionally for 9 months and when it does it I push on the key or jiggle it and it usually starts after that with no problem but not always. Tried a new ignition switch but didn’t do the trick any ideas

Welcome to the site

Sounds like a starter engagement issue..

I’d verify the noise is coming from the starter motor itself.

If so, (generally done within a starter motor failure ) is to remove the starter and check the engines ring gear for any bad spots (worn or broken teeth) through the starter motor opening before purchasing a new starter.. The engine would need to be manually rotated for an inspection 360* around the gear. If the gear proves ok, then just replace the starter motor.
Sometimes if a ring gear bad spot exists,, the engine on startup will be on that bad spot/s and the starter motor will grind etc. trying to engage. Bumping the starter with the switch can cause it to move just slightly beyond a bad area and normal cranking then continues.
Most often it’s just a replacement starter motor is needed because of a failing bendix/ motor nose drive gear,, but being this has been going on for 9 months I’d check the ring gear too, otherwise if there is a tooth/engagement issue it can fail a new starter reasonably quick..

I agree. Hopefully a new starter and drive gear / bendix ... will fix the issue. But after 9 months you could have some damaged flywheel teeth...

Starter is maybe 350 dollars or so.... the flywheel could be 1500 or more as the transmission or engine need to come out...

The key getting wiggled is not doing anything... its making a new attempt to start the engine.

Has anyone on a regular basis tried starting the engine while it was allready running ?? Making that horrible grinding noise ?? Because that can mess up the flywheel teeth .
