Default shift problems

I have an 01' Expedition with a 5.4 Triton. It all the sudden it acted like it was loosing power when shifting from 2nd into 3rd. The longer I held on the accelerator the slower it went. I can manually shift it into 2nd. The trans fluid color is good and the level is fine. This motor has 101k miles on it and the trans is a 4 speed auto and there are no codes set. What the heck is going on? I don't trust trans shops, my last vehicle needed a bearing and all they wanted to do is a full rebuild.
