Hi Folks,
I have a 1963 Thunderbird. It has a 300 HP 390 but it has never been rebuilt and it has about 150K miles on it. I recently bought this car and I have been trying to get it safe for the road and running right. After rebuilding the carb and changing the plugs, points and other ignition parts I have not been able to get it running right. I suspect there may be valve issues involved. If I have to fix that problem I'd rather do a rebuild. There may be another option... I have a chance to get a decent running 460 from a '77 LTD. I am concerned about two things regarding using this engine. Will it bolt up to the old automatic transmission in the T-Bird and will it bolt into the same mounts. the third issue is one of size. The 390 barely fits and there is no room even to put headers on it. Will the 460 be too wide? Of course I can measure it before buying it. If any of you out there have any knowledge regarding these issues please reply to this post.
