Can I use a 49 state Cat on my CA van?
So here's the full question-
I have a 2002 E350 Super Duty XLT, 9100 GVW, 5.4 gas engine, that supposedly needs the front y-pipe assembly replaced. It's a costly part from Ford, hard to find from other manufacturers.
The van was originally bought in CA - so it is under CA emissions as far as the on-board computer. Now I live in Texas, and I'm told that I don't need a CA catalytic converter, but that I could have problems with the check engine light if I use the 49 state CAT.
Is this right?

everything you said is correct.
One option if you install a non CA cat; if the p0420 sets install a spark plug anti fouler to shield the rear 02 which slows the switching time and can stop the dreaded p0420.
I can't guarantee it will work for your application.
