05 Explorer exposed slide pin
Just found this when I went under to find why I hear a slight scraping sound when I drive straight and it gets louder when I turn left only. Right turn is fine. I just want to know if this exposed pin has any correlation to that. I'm asking because the bore opening looks messed up. Also the caliper on the other side is clean not brown like this one. Thoughts appreciated.
That is the guide pin that's loose and the boot seems to no longer be there. Usually shops don't rebuild them anymore so parts like that aren't as readily available so a new caliper is usually the option. If that is not your scraping sound then it sounds it may be either the backing plate rubbing against one of the rotors or the right front wheel bearing telling you it is in need of changing. when you turn left all the weight of the car is shifted on the right front wheel putting more strain on the right front wheel bearing. when turning right most of the weight is on the left front wheel bearing.
The boot for the slide pin is missing. If the caliper hole is worn at all you will need a new caliper. If the caliper hole is not worn then just go buy a brake caliper hardware kit for your vehicle, most automatically stores sell these kits, also buy a small tube of brake grease to out on the new slide pin and inside the new boot
A little` side note,
When you go to assemble the parts, don't make the mistake of using ordinary grease for the sliding pins.
You need to use brake grease or synthetic grease.
Regular grease will destroy the boots and will not stand up to the high temps.
