I was driving my Taurus about 70 mph went the transmission stopped pulling. I read my "Haynes" all it said was replace the filter. I manual said there should be between 4 to 5 quarts of fluid in the pan. I drained about 10 quarts which leaves me to believe i have no fluid in the toque converter. since i have no idea how the fluid goes from the pan to the toque converter i don't know what to try next. I have no movement it any gear.

 

A good place to start would be to check all the fuses.
Then if you can manage it , see if there are any codes stored in the PCM that pertain to the trans.
Have you tried replacing the filter and fluid , then trying to see if you have any attempt to move?
How many miles are on the vehicle?

 

To add to hanky---If you drained 10 quarts of fluid, you have just about emptied the complete transmission. Just add 5 or 6 quarts of oil then syatrt the car and run it through the gears. It should not move. Place car in park, leave idling and add another 2 or 3 quarts and run it through the gears again. It should try to move. Then top off transmission fluid with car still idling. If it will drive, drive it for about 5 or 10 miles and check fluid again. If it will not move, the torque converter, pump or transmission needs rebuilt. Sorry.

 

Hey guys thanks for the input. The car has 84,000 miles. I have not checked the fuses. The only electrical check i done was making sure the car would only crank in park and neutral. ( according to Haynes the transmission range sensor replaces the neutral safety switch ) Has far as checking the PCM this would require a tow to the shop. Is there any way to remove this transmission without removing the sub frame.

P.S. my F150 has 218,000 with not major problems.

 

I did replace the filter. I then put 5 quarts of fluid in, crank the car and let it run around 1800 rpm's for about 5 min. the fluid level stayed at the full mark and no movement of the car. Could not even tell I put it in gear.

 

Sub frame has to be removed.

Possible pump, torque converter or what ever drives them.
Appears there is no attempt to pump fluid or you have a gigantic internal leak which could be sealing rings or maybe the pump may not even be turning.
Unfortunately trans may need to be removed. Cannot offer any addl suggestions without addl checks.
Did you notice any loose tubes when you removed the filter?
