Default 2004 Freestar (issue)

Hello,
This is in regards to my Pop's 2004 Freestar SEL 4.2Ltr .. Your going to love this part, this Van has, wait for it.... 56,802 miles on it, the little nipples were still on the tires when they dry-rotted, they do NOT go far from home, EVER..
Okay well now the Van is untagged because it started acting silly, spitting and sputtering etc.. Here's what I have done.. New plugs and wires, new coil, new MAS, checked every hose and wire connection possible. Sitting in park I slowly take the engine higher and exactly at 4K rpm it just goes putt putt and sounds like an old tug boat.
I have 2 different OBD testers and neither one will read and I can't take it to like AutoZone or anyplace because as I said, it's not tagged now, No lights are on like "check engine" or any other error lights. I'm at a loss here so I'm reaching out for help.

I tried to add a picture of the dash just to show mileage etc. but I got an error.

Thanks .. Dragon

Sounds like fuel delivery to me, fuel filter and fuel pressure from pump should be checked.

How long has the fuel been allowed to sit in the tank? It does degrade with time. When was the last time you added fresh fuel?

Thank you, I'll check that... The thing that throws me is how it starts acting up at exactly 4k rpm's.

@hanky
The fuel is less then a month old, I would drain it if I have to but do you think bad gas would cause it to only act up when it reaches exactly 4k rpm's?

The fuel and ignition systems are under greater demand and stress at higher engine speeds. I would also connect a scan tool to check for stored codes, live data from sensors during higher speeds and fuel trims.

@raski
Well I would hook up a scan device but as I mentioned in my post, I have 2 and neither one would connect (they both work fine on all the other vehicles) and a friend brought one over also, no luck. These ford "mini" vans are just horrible to work on period, both the windstar and freestar and yet they just kept on making them, anyway mom and pop love them for some reason (most likely because they don't have to work on them) but I'll do what I can to keep them happy because to me, that's all that matters.

On a different subject, I am not able to use the "quick reply" nor am I able to post an image, I get an error telling me that some "Token" is not present?

Some models had a "Rev Limiter". Not sure if that applied to your vehicle..

IF , no one here knows, you can always check with a dealer service dept.

If you put a good amount of fresh fuel in, by diluting it, you should be fine. Bad fuel generally will cause issues all the time, especially hard to start and I do not believe that's your case.

You're correct, it purrs like a cat, until 4K rpm...

Thanks .. Ralph
